At Kush Queen, Pride is Honoring a Shared History

In the 1980s, Queer community leaders in San Fransisco ushered in the beginnings of legal cannabis as they worked to ease health and wellness struggles around the AIDS epidemic. Their real-life needs brought legitimacy to the medical cannabis conversation. Pictures of my Queer community heroes hang in my office; Cleve Jones, Dennis Peron, and Mary Jane Rathburn look over me as I run Kush Queen.

Also on my wall of heroes is Marsha P. Johnson, another great reminder of gay liberation and how we got here today. Her beautiful smile beams back at me as I write this. 

For those not familiar with her story, Johnson was a trans activist, self-identified drag queen, and a true survivor living in New York City. She was also one of the first protesters at the Stonewall riots in 1969. Many recall Johnson having thrown the first brick outside of the club, but the truth is no one really agrees on who or what started it (was it a brick? a bottle? or city cobblestone?).

Nonetheless, everyone does agree that Johnson and fellow trans activist Sylvia Rivera played a massive part in the spontaneous protest against a police raid in those early morning hours. This act of social uprising is often viewed as the first Pride celebration, sparking a series of events that would change the LGBTQIA+ community forever. 

Pride is Revolutionary and Non-Conforming

Pride (as we know it today) is all about Queer celebration and love, but its roots are steeped in the journey of equal rights, visibility, and the acceptance of LGBTQIA+ people. It was never about rainbow-tinted capitalism, fleeting social media icons, and albeit, even super fun parades. Pride is about Queer liberation. 

"Stonewall was, at its core, about people reclaiming their narratives from a society that told them they were sick or pitiful or didn’t even exist," writes Shane O’Neill, a journalist for the New York Times.

After Stonewall, a new generation of gay activists emerged and organized, creating resources like the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). These events and grassroots organizations focused on Queer individuals gaining access to equal rights as citizens while also helping the community find dignity, acceptance, and a sense of belonging within society. STAR, for example, provided housing and support to homeless LGBT youth and sex workers in New York City.

Pride is About Community and Peers Supporting Peers

For everyone at Kush Queen, Pride is about more than just a seasonal festivity, it’s about taking a stand, increasing visibility, and supporting our Queer communities all year round. 

This year Kush Queen is donating 20% of proceeds from our Pride Collection to The Social Impact Center, founded by beloved Queer cannabis hero Felicia Carbajal, as well as to the Trans Latina Coalition, a local Los Angeles community-led, and founded organization.

Queer Liberation is Still Needed

Currently, countless pieces of appalling legislation are moving through state governments as an attempt to target the rights of trans people, attack trans youth, and reverse decades-worth of progress. 

According to the advocacy group, Human Rights Campaign, over 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were proposed in 2022 alone.

Sam Ames, the director of advocacy and government affairs for The Trevor Project recently explained to CBS news "research has shown that as many as 85% of trans youth say that they are watching these debates over their identity play out,". Ames continues "the direct results of these bills when they pass are to take away things that we know are correlated with increased mental health and decreased suicide risk: sports team participation, seeing yourself represented in a classroom, being accepted by your parents and your healthcare professionals. These are all associated with significantly lower odds of attempting suicide." 

It feels like Queer liberation is more important than ever, especially with such blatantly coordinated attacks against people who identify as such. 

Pride is Personal

Inclusivity and visibility are part of Kush Queen’s DNA. From the all-gender restroom to the Queer individuals who appear in our content and work behind the scenes, Kush Queen's identity as a brand is unapologetically gay.

 

As I get choked up thinking about my own experiences and identity, I can’t help but think about what a personal intimate experience celebrating Pride is for me. As a human, I self-identify not only as the CEO of this company but as a Queer woman surrounded by countless other Queer people in my life. People who are my family, friends, and frankly, my inspirations. I think of my parents raising a Queer son in South Louisiana and not once did anything but accept him for who he was. 

Since its inception, Kush Queen has celebrated Pride (year-round) and has raised well over $40,000 for Queer organizations, something I'm incredibly proud of.

As Pride season kicks off, it's time to celebrate the shared history of cannabis and the LGBTQIA+ community and remember how the path to legalization started. It's time to do the work our brand promise beautifully lays out. 

In most states, Cannabis is being considered an essential during widespread pandemic closures. We know the beginning of the progress we experience today was started by marginalized LGBTQIA+ communities. 

1980s LGBTQIA+ activist and change leaders’ fight for liberation and the HIV/AIDS movement led to what we know as modern cannabis legalization. We would not have this progress without the work of these overlooked communities’ organizing and grass-roots efforts. These communities understood the power of coming together for the collective good to increase equality for suffering individuals.

By celebrating Pride, it’s our hope to honor the activists’ spirit and keep their passion for cannabis access alive, shape normalization and reverse inequalities.

How Does Kush Queen Celebrate Pride?    

Self-Care and Community Care

We can all get wrapped up in fighting for rights, gaining representation, or simply become exhausted from having to explain ourselves that we often forget to practice self-care and community care. 

Not because we don’t want it or know that we need to take care of ourselves, but because it's sometimes a radical act. 

Saying no to the extra email or endless social scrolling so you can take a before bed soak and sit with your feelings or pushing yourself through the “I don’t want to” self talk to get that workout in because you know giving your mind a rest is necessary is not always easy. 

To us “self-care is self-preservation,” and when we are called to be in “brave spaces rather than safe spaces,” taking care is a must. 

Audre’s Lorde’s thoughts on self-care remind us that these acts are not indulgent but radical when applying them to daily life. And also reminds us to rely on our communities for support. We cannot do this work alone.

In turn, community care becomes a functioning part of filling our cups and helping fulfill others as well. We thrive when self-care and community care become fully functional.

Kush Queen's Pride 2020 Community Partner

We believe in, understand and trust the power of community. Our concept of community led us to Asylum Connect our 2020 community partner. 

Asylum Connect is the first and only digital resource for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and other persecuted LGBTQ+ people. Asylum Connect connects people with affirming communities that can help with essential needs including: medical, mental health, housing, transportation, translation, educational and employment services.

Everyday, Asylum Connect, a community-led non-profit uses digital spaces to facilitate the safe navigation of people fleeing persecution due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.  

How does Kush Queen support our Pride community partner?

This year, we decided to take a different approach on how we support our community partners. 

As a cannabis company, we’ve been turned away and asked not to make public statements about supporting organizations. This “hi, we’ll take your money but don’t promote it” attitude influenced us to stop our support at donations. Even though over the past three years we have donated $30,000.00 between TransLife Line, Born This Way Foundation, Be You TiFul Foundation, and Operation Beagle Freedom; simply donating money is not enough.   

Kush Queen is committing $25K in cash and in kind donations during the course of the rest of 2020 to our partner. In addition to monetary donations, we will be using our platform to promote Asylum Connect on our social media, email marketing and websites.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, I contemplated if we should even celebrate 4/20 at all. It’s a strange time and the rate at which the world is changing we never know what tomorrow will bring. What would have been a month-long celebration has turned into telling the Kush Queen story; one of fear, courage, commitment, and the plant we can't imagine living without.

The Power of Being Seen

The greatest lesson I’ve learned along the journey of Kush Queen is the priceless value of being seen. This plant has allowed me to be seen and to pass it on and see others. When you experience the act of seeing others, you cannot lose. Since cannabis is an emerging industry people are worried about compliance, funding, and marketing their product. All of those things are important, but importantly are the people who use the product. 

Other than the 18-35 year old white male stoner, most people’s cannabis experience has been invisible, not unlike their narrative. At Kush Queen, we see all types of people with differing beliefs and life paths seeing themselves and that’s what we’re here for. 

Part 1

Cannabis Is Vital

A few weeks ago, California deemed cannabis as essential and I could not imagine getting through this pandemic without cannabis, it's more than essential to me it's vital.

I have been self-isolating for weeks now, our team has been working via Zoom with our WFH team. A few of our brave employees continue to help ship orders and keep our products on the shelves of California dispensaries. Our small team has maintained and made me extremely proud on all fronts. They have continued to care for each other, the products, and our customers despite living in a crisis. They have shown something that I believe we all need to have right now, something that I believe my purpose led me to discover in myself through Kush Queen: courage. 

Kush Queen Cannabis Was Born

It’s not every day that people start companies with $0 and pipe dreams, yet that's how it all started. From our family kitchen and garage, we developed our first CBD products. At the time, our business was called The Crystal Cult where we made Swarovski crystal vape pens. Even though we experienced early success, something was missing. We wanted to create a more accessible wellness-focused products and share our family’s passion for cannabis. 

Our namesake, Kush Queen was born from a community favorite vape - The Kush Queen and our unwavering commitment to our community has never changed. You guide us.

The Flagship - Cannabis Bath Bombs

At this time, I had been working in the cannabis industry for a while and didn’t see many topical cannabis products that spoke to me. Weird textures, dense oils, the wellness element was missing and I kept thinking, where is the intersection of Lush-like quality and cannabis. 

That thought track led to what you experience today with Kush Queen Bath Bombs. Since day one, my mom and I worked and reworked the blends and processes until they were high-quality and potent. And like any good mother-daughter team, my mom would not allow me to take credit for the formulations of our flagship product, cannabis-infused bath bombs. I can admit it, she did all the heavy lifting.

The two most important elements we wanted to use in our formulas were high-quality ingredients and the entourage effect. Those two qualities will always be found in Kush Queen Bath Bombs.

One Part Fear, Three Parts Courage

It’s one thing to make something that you love and a completely different experience to sell it. I will never forget the first few sales because they were truly unnerving and exhilarating.

From the products to the marketing I was constantly making a creative statement and putting my view of what I thought cannabis could be for people out there. Naysayers? I’ve heard it all from I’m ruining my life to I’m going to hell BUT I believed deep down in my soul and heart that what I had to say mattered. That a cannabis brand from my perspective would be a vital part of the movement towards legalization, the social acceptance of cannabis globally, and hopefully eventually the end of the war on drugs. 

Over the years, we’ve faced every type of shut down from selling CBD online to violating Instagram’s TOS policies and legal weed. Another hill would be climbed, all would be well and then POOF, at any given moment we would be shut down. 

With every bit of growth, my gratitude was frequently met with fear, because you never really knew if it all would come crashing down.   

We have weathered many storms personally and professionally from bank account shutdowns to my mom’s unexpected brain surgery. Through it, all Kush Queen has kept me going and I’ve always continued to get up despite feeling like quitting many times. 

Brene Brown sums it up well in Daring Greatly, “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” It wasn’t until recently that I realized what the journey of Kush Queen has taught me. Now I know it's courage.

Part 2

Evolution and Innovation 

As the popularity of our cannabis infused bath bombs grew, so did our team and capabilities. During this time, Michael Sawyer, my fiancé and business partner, was working behind the scenes to create a scalable process for making cannabis oil water soluble and transdermal. 

This technology would eventually fuel the development of our nano topical products. 

Let’s take it back to 2017. Michael is passionate about infusing beverages of all kinds and understood the limitations to cannabis oil. After all, we are talking about actual oil. Even just 2 years ago, drinks on the market in California were dosed with THC and CBD oil which resulted in the cannabinoids floating on top of the liquid, pretty gross.  

Delivery Methods Are Key

More than the strange oil element, edibles were not a choice for a lot of people. You see, when you eat cannabis oil your body processes it through the stomach and liver. For the average person this process takes at least an hour, which often results in people being unable to get their dose right or consistent. Moreover, your liver converts the THC to 11-hydroxy-THC, which scientifically is a completely different, more potent molecule. 

At this point Michael has been in the lab non-stop. When he finally achieved his nano particle water soluble cannabis technology we knew Kush Queen would have more effective topicals and more freedom in formulas. 

I had long wondered why every cannabis infused topical was either a salve or oil. It was because the science tech didn’t exist and cannabis oil needed a carrier. With Michael’s nano technology, for Kush Queen that was no longer an issue.

The First Test - Getting High In The Shower

One night I was struggling to sleep and having lung problems at the same time so I couldn’t smoke. Michael was up to the challenge of trying to help me and dosed some nano THC into our body wash. I jumped in the shower and lathered up with excitement as I am always ecstatic to be his guinea pig. 

As I lifted my head up from drying off my lower body, I felt it hit. I was high...from a shower gel. You cannot imagine my excitement as I walked in the bedroom baked like a fresh cookie. Red eyes and giggly, Michael was ecstatic - it really worked. 15 minutes later, I was asleep. 

Development began on Kush Queen Topicals

The next day we started working on what would be our cannabis infused nano topicals: Soaked Shower Gel, Melt Relief Lotion, and Kush Queen Lubricant. 

I had been using cannabis topicals for about 10+ years at this point and knew all the things I disliked: coconut oil in everything, people selling infused oil as a lube, salve blends that didn’t work on my pain. And most importantly the fact that so many of these products were not actually delivering the cannabis directly into my bloodstream. 

We knew the ingredients had to be clean and we wanted to use doses that could really transform your daily bathroom experience. 

Soaked CBD Shower Gel was the first to be born. A lightweight, clean body wash with a transdermal dose of CBD. Scented with citrus, parbean, phthalate, and free of any harmful ingredients. 

Melt CBD Pain Lotion was the second of the Kush Queen nano topicals family, an instant hit because of its organic icy hot feel. Melt doesn’t just take the pain away, it helps it stay away. 

Kush Queen Lubricant was a response to the most popular cannabis lubricant on the market being coconut oil based and not an actual lubricant. That lube took 1 hour plus to work and was not latex safe (ew). Creating an inclusive lube for the v, the b, and the p, that was latex free, toy-safe and made with the most sensitive skin in mind was our goal. Fast forward 2 years and KQ Lube is now our number 2 best selling product.

Sometimes You’re A Little Early

At this point, our excitement around launching Kush Queen topicals is high. We go to market and realize the topicals category is a joke to the cannabis industry. Looking back on the experience, 2 things came into play here. It was 2017, the wellness element and importance of delivery methods in cannabis was nowhere near what it is today and second, most people that had tried topicals had the same unsatisfying experiences we had.

 That’s when the Kush Queen promise was created. Given we had an uphill battle to convince people that our topicals really worked and were better for your body, we wanted to be transparent and educate our community on why and how our topicals were effective. On all product packaging and product pages, we inform the community about our nano tech and how Kush Queen ensures all of our products have the best delivery method possible for quick absorption.   

 When it comes down to it, we understand and take the responsibility of being innovative in the cannabis industry.

Over the last 4 weeks, Kush Queen has grown in ways we could have never imagined when starting this company. Within weeks of reaching our fourth birthday, we are exactly where we want to be, sharing our vision of daily wellness with our community. 

Given the times, living with this new shared perspective for a little over a month really got us reflecting, tuning in and connecting with Kush Queens everywhere. Part 3 of our story shares the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

What a Year for CBD Momentum and Market Conditions

2019 will always be a historic year for CBD. With the Farm Bill passing in the Senate and the House in early December 2018, the new year promised to be an exciting growth year for CBD.

At the time, Kush Queen was experiencing incredible growth. Our team was evolving, constantly improving and making production adjustments to ensure we are creating the same high-quality CBD experience with every single handmade product.

Mid-summer, payment processing in the CBD industry came crashing down. Many in the industry went months with no ability to accept payments online and had to face tough decisions to keep their business afloat. 

Through the grit and determination of our team and the patience and loyalty of our customers, Kush Queen made it through that chapter. As a small business innovating in a rapidly expanding industry we cannot say thank you enough to our customers, fans, friends, and family for the support. For example, on the eve of our first big mainstream event, one of our lows transformed right into one of the highest highs – BeautyCon LA.

In the same spirit of getting our dream up and running like Amazon, Google, and Disney, we started Kush Queen in our family garage. The Kush Queen brand was born out of our sister company, The Crystal Cult. The Kush Queen was a vape that turned into the beginning of a community. So many kush queens were out there but the cannabis industry’s male slated products left room for a newcomer with a different vision.
