Building a Post Workout Routine

Last Friday I stepped outside and was instantly met with the first 90 plus degree day of summer. My edges curled back, my thigh gap got sticky and for me, that can only signal one thing. The beginning of golf season! Yes, you heard that right, golf. The sport that has generally been associated with rich old white men, is the sport that this little brown girl has been playing since she was 7. Growing up in the scorching Texas heat, and then playing for four years during college in Georgia, I’ve had my share of long achy nights trying to recover from carrying golf bags for 6 hours each day. I wish I had Kush Queen back then to help me with the stress of playing golf, as well as post-game recovery products to ease my soreness.

It never fails that the morning after playing a round of golf I wake up feeling sore all over. The kind of soreness that makes you question why you ever choose to move your body in the first place. My neck is tight, my shoulders burn and my head hurts so badly I feel hungover. That’s when I know it’s time for my Post Workout Recovery Routine. Now that I’m an adult I’ve incorporated a routine for getting rid of soreness. This plan also works as a killer self-care routine after a stressful day of work!

Step 1: Add CBD to your morning smoothie

I’m a creature of habit and that extends to my food. I have the same smoothie every morning. I know that might sound monotonous but try it out for yourself, and I think you’ll understand why I’m so crazy about it. 

  • 1 cup of frozen Blueberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 tbs of nut butter (I prefer Justin’s Honey Almond Butter)
  • Dash of Cinnamon or to taste
  • 1 tsp honey (or you can soak dates, just make sure they’re pliable before blending)
  • 1-2 Droppers of Kush Queen BARE CBD Tincture
  • 1-1 1/2 cups of oat or nut milk
  • 1 tbs of chia seeds or flax meal (optional)

Blend until smooth. Not only will the smoothie help to give you nutrients to feed your depleted muscles, but adding CBD will help with the inflammation from your workout and relieve any stress you might have so that you can start your day in a more calm state of mind. Bonus!

Step 2: Take a morning bath. I know, crazy right?

Who says baths are just for the evening? There’s nothing more luxurious to me than taking a hot bath, lighting some candles and putting on a podcast at 10 am on a Saturday. Well, that is until you add in our next step. Since my back is feeling like it’s going to start tweaking, I reach for the Kush Queen CBD bath bomb in RELIEVE. 2 Simple DIY Bäre CBD Face Masks

I love the summer. The heat, swimming pools are open, barbecuing yummy foods on the balcony – all of it. But my skin, on the other hand, may say otherwise. For whatever reason, the summer brings out the worst in my combination skin…and I mean the worst. My t-zone area is so greasy but at the same painfully dry – and let’s not mention the breakouts along my temples. 

So being the self-titled “DIY Queen” I am, I mixed up a few masks with the help of Kush Queens Bare CBD oil! For the most part, these masks use ingredients that can easily be found around a kitchen and can be switched up depending on what your skin goals are! 

CBD oil, not hemp seed oil – is quickly becoming a staple in the beauty industry. It’s nothing short of a blessing for skin! A 2014 study showed, “CBD oil may help reduce various types of acne thanks to its ability to adjust how the body creates sebum.” Kush Queens, Bare Daily Wellness uses olive oil, which is an amazing anti-ager and reviver of sun damage as well. And because a few drops of olive oil goes a long way, only a small amount of CBD oil is needed to get refreshed skin!

Honey Oat Mask

Oats aren’t just high in fiber and good for cholesterol, they’re also super nourishing to our skin! Enriched with healthy fats and natural cleansers (saponins), oats give pores a gentle deep cleanse while leaving skin gently hydrated. Plus it’s great for anyone who has skin with high pH levels (dry and itchy skin) because oatmeal can help stabilize them. Raw honey is also a dear friend to the skin, hair, and nails – a natural exfoliant and moisturizer it leaves skin soft and glowy. But ya know, beware of any allergies you may have – especially if you’re allergic to bees, pollen, and celery! I really enjoyed this mask because it was so cooling on my skin! Unlike masks that dry tight, this oat mask softly molded to my face. 

  • 2 tablespoons of oats
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • 1 full dropper of Bare CBD oil
  • Enough water to make a spreadable paste 

Grind your oats! After grinding your oats, combine all ingredients and mix. Apply and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Admire that skin!

ACV Clay Mask

For those that don’t know the power of raw apple cider vinegar or the “Aztec Clay” mask, you’re about to learn. Raw apple cider vinegar pops in every home remedy, from loc detoxes to ways to manage your diabetes, as well as ways to help with acne. It may also help unclog pores and smooth skin texture. The clay mask, which you’ve probably seen every on Instagram and Youtube at some point – lives up the hype! I swear I’m such a skeptic about anything, but I bought a jar of it last year around the holidays and I haven’t regretted once. The clay mask will reach down into your pores and rebuke the oil and dirt trapped within. It’s also a great hair mask for all hair types. Just be mindful that it does not go down your sink without a fight, a lived and re-lived learned experience. But you can throw into the grass and it will act as a natural fertilizer – it’s the circle of life baybee *Kawhi Leonard voice.* 

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of Aztec Clay mask
  • 1 full dropper of Bare CBD oil
  • Enough ACV to have a spreadable paste

Combine all ingredients in a non-metal bowl and mix with a non-metal spoon.* I like the consistency of a loose toothpaste, if that makes any sense. After getting it to your desired consistency, apply – once again careful not to use metal utensils. (* Bentonite Clay literally absorbs impurities and heavy toxins when applied, so if exposed to metal it will absorb the impurities from that and not from you!) Leave for 10-15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water. Yes, this dries very tight. Yes, your skin may be a little red for like 20-ish minutes afterward – but these are all momentary and will only reveal bouncy and refreshed skin. 

So sit back, kick your feet up and let these simple masks do the work for you!

Empowering the Solar Plexus

The solar plexus chakra, also known as the third chakra, is located behind the navel. It’s Sanskrit name, Manipura, means “illustrious gem” and is symbolized by a yellow 10 petaled circle with an upside-down triangle in its center. The last of the physical chakras, the solar plexus is home to our feelings of personal empowerment, control, and abundance. The “gut feeling” we often refer to, when our intuition communicates through our bodies, stems from this chakra. 

Keeping this chakra in balance is key to feeling a sense of security, self-confidence, and self-assurance. The solar plexus is associated with the fire element and signifies our ability to take action and build momentum in our lives. The phrase “being fired up” is a nod to the sensation of heat in the solar plexus when we feel excitement and enthusiasm.

Imbalances in this area can manifest as lack of control and fear of being overpowered. Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and overactivity/being busy are often signs of a shrunken solar plexus. Obsession with gaining power, controlling behaviors, and an overinflated ego is associated with an enlarged third chakra. 

Because our chakras operate as a holistic system of energy centers, balancing each one is essential to overall wellbeing. For a refresh on how to balance first and second chakras, check out the blogs on the root and sacral from earlier this year.

As always, there is no single way to maintain balance in our lives, we can utilize a variety of alternative therapies to reach a homeostatic state. 

Trust Your Gut

Based on its location with respect to the body, the stomach and digestive system are associated with this energy center. Issues with weight, gastrointestinal problems, and poor gut health are symptoms of an imbalanced solar plexus. Good nutrition is a tool for optimizing all chakras, especially the third. Foods that enhance the solar plexus are:

  • Citrus fruits (especially lemon)
  • Bananas
  • Pineapple
  • Mango

Choosing fresh, organic foods when possible and avoiding processed foods, refined sugar, alcohol, nicotine, and animal by-products can help clear a blocked solar plexus.

Get Fired Up 

Since the solar plexus is associated with the fire element, building heat in the body through movement increases clarity and balance in this area. Yoga poses, like Boat, Bow, and any Warrior pose, activate this energy center, while restorative poses like Child’s Pose and Corpse, or Savasana, help calm and soothe it. 

Exercises that work the core, like Pilates and Barre, create fire energy in the solar plexus and strengthen more than just our abs–they increase our sense of self and personal mastery. Other heat building workouts, like High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and kickboxing, help build a sense of empowerment and self-confidence with practice and growth over time.

Scents of Empowerment

Targeted aromatherapy is a super simple way to bring the solar plexus into balance at home and on the go. Try these essential oils in a diffuser or DIY spray for third chakra healing:

  • Bergamot
  • Rosemary
  • Lemongrass
  • Cedarwood
  • Chamomile 

If you want to clear your space and balance your energy, add the plant equivalents of the above essential oils to a sage bundle for smudging.

If you really want to create a vibe, there’s a bath bomb experience for that!
