High January: An Elevated Alternative to Dry January

You may or may not have heard of Dry January–a campaign created by Alcohol Change UK that inspires millions of people to give up alcohol for 31 days each year. The timing is perfect: it’s the start of a new year and many of us are resolving to take our health more seriously, achieve our fitness goals, and reach new milestones in our lives. Plus, there’s a huge confidence boost from committing to something and seeing it through.

But just because Dry January inspires positive change doesn’t mean it won’t have its challenges.

  • What will you do when you’re invited to happy hour or brunch?

  • How will you react when you’re pressured to drink?

  • What’ll replace your glass of wine with dinner?

  • How will you elude the temptation to drink?

Just like we suggested in our #goals blog, having a plan in place and a firm Why will help ease the pressure of making a big change.

Elevate your Priorities

Imagine the things you could make room for if you had an alcohol-free month. Here are some lifestyle changes that’ll come naturally when you make this shift:

  • You’ll save money on pricey cocktails when dining out

  • You can substitute healthier beverages, like Kombucha, lemon water, or a cannabis-infused libation, for dehydrating alcoholic drinks

  • Booze is full of empty calories! You’ll not only be more hydrated, but you’ll also avoid the discomfort of a belly full of beer. More room for healthy foods that taste great and fuel your body!

  • Your sleep will improve. A glass or two of wine can put you to sleep, but it won’t keep you there. You’ll get up to use the bathroom and the dehydration will keep you awake well into the night if you drink too much before bed.

  • And given all of the above, you’ll have more energy, time, stamina, and money to allocate towards your fitness goals!

It’s easy to see how many facets of your life would benefit from less alcohol. When temptation strikes, refer back to your list to remind yourself of why you embarked on Dry January to begin with.

Elevate your Social Life

Inevitably, you’ll be faced with the opportunity to drink. You can decline an invitation to avoid booze altogether or you can come prepared with an alternative. This is where Dry January becomes High January!

Depending on where you live, cannabis has made huge strides to overcome its stigmatized reputation and more people are hosting 420-friendly events. Consider bringing some elevated party favors to your next gathering:
